Solbian solar powers Schionning electric catamaran
Emotion is a newly built Schionning GF520 fast cruising catamaran fitted with retractable electric saildrive motors. It’s sleek topsides are fitted with semi-flexible Italian-made Solbian solar panels. A combination of SP series 144w and 118w panels gives the array a total output of almost 2kW to assist in recharging the batteries.
The Solbian panels were tailor-made with a complete black appearance and soldering wires out the back, resulting in a neat flush mount on the top deck, which can be walked on carefully with soft-soled shoes or bare feet. They are held in place with VHB self-adhesive backing.
Owners Anna and Rob Cave, originally from Melbourne, spent most of the past 3 years on-site in Port Stephens to build their dream boat. Now that she’s launched, plans are to sail her first to Melbourne, then the rest of the world.
